The Abruzzo region is world renowned for its rich and comforting cuisine that goes perfectly with a whole range of wines. Though many perceive the wines of this beautiful central Italian region, located along the Adriatic Sea, as uninteresting, Abruzzo, with its rolling foothills, is perfectly suited for vineyards. Unlike other regions in Italy, Abruzzo carries a relatively small number of controlled appellations. Montepulciano (not to be confused with the Tuscan town of the same name where Vino Nobile is produced) and Trebbiano are the two varieties that undergird the region’s most recognized DOC: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. These prolific grape varieties are often readily grown using the local tendone method, which generally produces very high yields. The Abruzzo region also ranks fifth in Italy for volume of wine produced. Like other parts of Italy, Abruzzo’s wine industry is trying to increase its international appeal by promoting artisanal wines. The region’s best wines hail from the Colline Teramane appellation (recently elevated to DOCG status) located in the lowlands of the northern province of Teramo, notably in the sub-zone of Controguerra. Abruzzo also produces a tasty rosé, called Cerasuolo, which is ideal as an aperitivo on a hot summer’s day or as an accompaniment to the many seafood dishes for which the region is also renowned.
